Engineered Fastening and Assembly Systems
With over 60 years of combined experience, the Wm. F. Hurst Company offers
solutions to your fastening problems with one of the widest selections of specialty
fasteners, tooling and engineered assembly systems in the world.
One example of this would be blind riveting. A break-stem blind rivet is a precision
two-piece metal fastener, consisting of a headed hollow rivet body and a solid mandrel
which are assembled together. The name blind rivet comes from the fact that it is used
in those fasten circumstances where you cannot get to or see the backside of an
assembly.
How do you fasten something when you do not have access to the back of the work
piece? The solution is a blind rivet (Figure 1).

The technology has advanced far past the primitive shoe eyelet and nail design. There
are literally hundreds of various blind fasteners available today. Blind rivets are used in
the manufacture of automobiles, aircraft, trucks and trailers, computers, appliances
and boats. Almost any product made can benefit from using blind fasteners.
Why are blind breakstem rivets used?
- Lower installed cost: Rivets can be installed quicker, and easier by unskilled labor
then alternate methods of fastening. The end result is that the final in-place cost of the
product manufactured will be lowered.
- Blind Installation: Blind rivets can be used when there are no reasonable
alternative fastening method available, such as fastening to hollow tubing (Figure 2).
Blind rivets can be used to allow one person to fasten from one side of the work
piece, thus eliminating the need for a second person to be on the backside. This results
in lower labor costs.

-
Permanent, Tamper Resistant, Reliable Fastening: Riveted assemblies
(Figure 3) are secure and they will not vibrate loose like threaded fasteners.
-
Lightweight Ergonomic Tooling: The tooling offered today is lightweight and
fast. This translates to more operator comfort and helps reduce the chance for
repetitive motion injuries.
-
Automation: There are a wide variety of automated systems available to speed up
manufacturing processes. Vacuum mandrel collection tooling, Inline tooling, Rivet
presenters, Cartridge fed rivets, Hopper fed rivets and Multiple head rivet machines
are all being used in high volume applications to speed up assembly processes.
-
Greater Design Flexibility: Products may be designed to eliminate unnecessary
fasteners, to have better ascetics (Figure 4), to assemble faster and at a lower
cost.
